Kids Tooth Extraction

Our dentists aim to preserve a child’s natural tooth whenever possible. However, there are situations when removing a tooth is the safest option. For example, a severely damaged tooth, stubborn baby tooth, infection, or orthodontic concerns may make an extraction necessary.

At Glen Ellyn kiDDS Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, our pediatric dentists provide kids tooth extractions with the unique needs of young patients in mind. Our pediatric dentists take time to evaluate the tooth, explain the procedure to parents, and help children feel as comfortable as possible throughout their visit.

If your child has a painful, damaged, or problematic tooth, call (630) 348-9888 to schedule an evaluation with Glen Ellyn kiDDS.

Why Might a Child Need a Tooth Extraction?

Primary teeth have an important job while they are in your child’s mouth, which includes helping with chewing and speech and holding space for permanent teeth.

However, there are times when a pediatric tooth extraction may be appropriate. These reasons include:

  • Severe tooth decay that cannot be predictably restored
  • A tooth that has been badly damaged by an injury
  • Dental infection that cannot be treated while preserving the tooth
  • A baby tooth that is preventing a permanent tooth from erupting properly
  • A baby tooth that has not fallen out when expected
  • Crowding or other orthodontic concerns

Our pediatric dentists always examine your child’s teeth and consider available treatment options before recommending an extraction. If there is a reasonable way to restore and maintain the tooth, we can discuss those options with you.

When Is a Baby Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Baby teeth naturally become loose and fall out as permanent teeth develop underneath them. Most should be allowed to complete this process on their own.

A baby tooth extraction may be needed when that natural process does not go as expected. For example, a permanent tooth may begin erupting while the baby tooth remains firmly in place. Removing the primary tooth may sometimes give the permanent tooth a clearer path to erupt.

Decay and dental injuries can also lead to extraction. If a baby tooth is too damaged to repair or develops a serious infection, removing it may be necessary to protect your child’s oral health.

Because primary teeth help maintain space for adult teeth, our pediatric dentists consider your child’s dental development before recommending removal.

What Happens During a Pediatric Tooth Extraction?

Before performing a pediatric dental extraction, we carefully examine the tooth and surrounding area. Dental X-rays may be taken when needed to evaluate the tooth’s roots, the surrounding bone, and developing permanent teeth.

If we recommend extraction, we’ll explain why it is needed and what you and your child can expect.

Typically, the area around the tooth is numbed with local anesthetic, which will prevent your child from feeling any pain during the procedure. The dentist then carefully loosens and removes the tooth. The exact process depends on the tooth, its roots, and the reason it needs to be removed.

Our pediatric dental team uses age-appropriate communication throughout the appointment. We avoid overwhelming children with unnecessary details and adjust our approach based on their age and comfort level.

Helping Anxious Children Through an Extraction

It is understandable for a child to feel nervous about having a tooth removed. Even children who usually do well at dental appointments may be anxious when they know they need treatment.

As board-certified pediatric dentists, Dr. Neal and Dr. Trinh have specialized training in caring for children, including those who experience dental anxiety. Our practice provides a child-friendly environment where we can adapt our communication and approach to the individual patient.

For children who have significant anxiety, difficulty sitting still, special healthcare needs, or more involved treatment needs, we may recommend sedation dentistry. Sedation is not necessary for every extraction. If it could benefit your child, we will discuss suitable options based on their age, health, treatment needs, and comfort level.

What Should I Expect After My Child’s Tooth Extraction?

After a tooth extraction for kids, some tenderness is normal while the area heals. Your child’s dentist will provide specific aftercare instructions based on the type of extraction performed.

Your child may need to eat softer foods temporarily and avoid activities that could disturb the extraction site. Good oral hygiene is important, but you will need to follow the dentist’s instructions for cleaning around the area while it heals.

We will also explain what symptoms are expected and when you should contact our office. Following these instructions closely is the best way to support a smoother recovery.

Will My Child Need a Space Maintainer After a Baby Tooth Extraction?

Sometimes. If a baby tooth has to be removed earlier than it would naturally fall out, the neighboring teeth may gradually shift into the open space. That movement can reduce the room available for the permanent tooth that will eventually erupt there.

A space maintainer is a small dental appliance designed to preserve that space while your child’s mouth develops.

Not every early baby tooth extraction requires one. Whether a space maintainer is appropriate depends on factors such as which tooth was removed, your child’s age, and the development of the permanent teeth.

Having pediatric dentistry and orthodontics available at Glen Ellyn kiDDS allows us to consider both your child’s current dental health and their developing bite when planning care.

What If My Child Needs a Tooth Removed for Orthodontic Treatment?

In some orthodontic cases, removing a tooth may be recommended as part of a larger treatment plan. This can occur when there is significant crowding or when creating additional space can help improve tooth alignment.

Because Glen Ellyn kiDDS provides pediatric dentistry and children’s orthodontics under one roof, our dental and orthodontic teams can coordinate when an extraction is connected to orthodontic care.

Every child’s situation is different. Tooth removal is not automatically required for braces or clear aligner treatment. If an extraction is recommended, we will explain how it fits into your child’s overall treatment plan.

We were recently in the Chicago area visiting family when my 5 yr old son chipped a tooth while playing with his cousins. My sister-in-law called (her kid's dentist) to see if they could see my son on short notice. Not only did they squeeze him in on what appeared to be a very busy day, the staff was very friendly and they did a great job fixing the tooth.
