Your child’s first dental visit is an important step toward building a lifetime of healthy smiles. Whether you’re bringing in a toddler for their first checkup or an older child who has never been to a dentist, we want the experience to be comfortable, positive, and stress-free.
At Glen Ellyn kiDDS Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, our office is designed with children and families in mind. Our board-certified pediatric dentists, Dr. Christopher Neal and Dr. Sandra Trinh, specialize in caring for infants, children, and teens. We understand that visiting a new dentist can feel exciting for some children and intimidating for others, so we take a personalized approach to every visit.
During your child’s first pediatric dentist visit, we’ll get to know them, evaluate their oral health, and help your family establish a strong foundation for preventive dental care.

When Should a Child First See a Dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling a baby’s first dental visit when their first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday.
These early appointments help parents learn how to care for developing teeth and prevent problems such as early childhood cavities. However, not every child begins dental care during infancy. Some children come to us for their first appointment as toddlers, preschoolers, or even older kids.
If your child hasn’t been to the dentist yet, it’s never too late to start. Our pediatric dental team can evaluate their teeth, discuss any concerns, and help them become familiar with dental visits. For older children, this first appointment may involve a more complete examination and cleaning, depending on their age, oral health, and comfort level.
What Happens During a Child’s First Dentist Appointment?
Every child is different, so we adjust the appointment based on their age and comfort level. However, most first visits include several important steps.
Getting Comfortable With Our Office and Team
We know that walking into an unfamiliar dental office can be overwhelming for some children. Our Glen Ellyn practice provides a warm, kid-friendly environment where children can relax and even have fun.
Our team takes time to introduce the appointment in an age-appropriate way. We explain what we’re doing, answer questions, and work at a pace that makes sense for your child whenever possible.
For children who are nervous or hesitant, building trust is an important part of the visit.
Reviewing Your Child’s Dental and Medical History
Before beginning the examination, we’ll review your child’s medical and dental history. This includes discussing any previous dental experiences, medications, allergies, medical conditions, or concerns you have about their teeth.
We may also ask about brushing habits, diet, thumb sucking, pacifier use, or other factors that can affect oral development.
Parents are encouraged to share any information that could help us make their child’s appointment more comfortable.
A Gentle Pediatric Dental Examination
During the exam, our pediatric dentist checks your child’s teeth, gums, and other oral structures.
We look for signs of cavities, enamel problems, gum inflammation, and other concerns. We also evaluate how your child’s teeth are developing and how their upper and lower teeth fit together.
For younger children, the examination may be brief and focused on introducing them to dental care. Older children may receive a more comprehensive evaluation based on their needs.
Dental Cleaning and Preventive Care
Depending on your child’s age, their first visit may include a professional dental cleaning. A cleaning helps remove plaque and buildup from areas that can be difficult to reach with regular brushing.
We may also recommend preventive treatments, such as fluoride varnish, to help strengthen tooth enamel and reduce the risk of cavities. As permanent molars begin to erupt, dental sealants may also be recommended to protect the deep grooves of the back teeth.
Our approach focuses on preventing dental problems whenever possible rather than waiting until treatment is necessary.
Dental X-Rays When Needed
Not every child needs dental X-rays during their first appointment. Our pediatric dentists recommend X-rays based on factors such as your child’s age, dental development, cavity risk, symptoms, and clinical findings.
When appropriate, dental X-rays can help identify cavities between teeth, evaluate developing permanent teeth, and reveal concerns that may not be visible during a regular examination.
We’ll explain why X-rays are recommended before proceeding.
Discussing Your Child’s Oral Health With You
Before the appointment is complete, we’ll review our findings and answer your questions.
If your child needs additional treatment, we’ll explain the concern, discuss available options, and help you understand the next steps. We also provide guidance for brushing, flossing, fluoride use, nutrition, and other everyday habits that support healthy teeth.
At Glen Ellyn kiDDS, we believe parents should feel informed and involved in their child’s dental care.
How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Dental Visit
A little preparation at home can go a long way.
For younger children, keep explanations simple. You might tell them that the dentist will count their teeth, look at their smile, and help keep their mouth healthy.
For older children, encourage them to ask questions about what will happen.
A few helpful preparation tips include:
- Keep the conversation positive. Avoid sharing frightening dental stories or describing appointments as something to worry about.
- Read a children’s book about visiting the dentist. Familiar stories can help younger children understand what to expect.
- Avoid promising that nothing will hurt. Instead, explain that the dental team will help them feel comfortable and explain what they’re doing.
- Choose an appointment time that works for your child. Younger children may do better when they’re rested and not hungry.
- Share concerns ahead of time. Let our team know if your child has dental anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or previous negative healthcare experiences.
You don’t need to prepare your child for every possible part of the appointment. Our pediatric dental team is experienced in introducing dental care in ways children can understand.

What If My Child Is Nervous About Their First Dentist Appointment?
Dental anxiety is common, particularly when children are unfamiliar with dental treatment.
Some children are worried about having someone examine their mouth. Others may be sensitive to sounds, unfamiliar equipment, or new surroundings.
Our board-certified pediatric dentists have specialized training in children’s behavior and dental development. We use patient communication, age-appropriate explanations, and individualized approaches to help children feel more comfortable.
We also have experience caring for children with special healthcare needs who may require accommodations during their visits.
For children who need more involved dental treatment and have difficulty tolerating procedures, sedation dentistry may be an option. However, most first dental visits focus on examination, prevention, and helping the child become familiar with our team, so sedation typically isn’t needed.
